Promoting Community & Individual Action
California Climate Action Registry
To reduce the County’s “environmental footprint,” the County must be accountable for its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. In 2007 the County joined the California Climate Action Registry (Registry) to establish our “environmental footprint,” determine goals for reducing GHG in County operations, and develop GHG measurement processes. Cool County
LA County has pledged to be a "Cool County." The Cool County pledge includes establishing a GHG emission footprint, developing a GHG mitigation plan, working with local entities to reduce regional GHG 80% by 2050, and supporting federal legislation to raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards.

Brag About Your Bag
On January 22, 2008 the Board of Supervisors took a major step forward in this effort, adopting the landmark Los Angeles County Single Use Bag Reduction and Recycling Program, a comprehensive strategy to reduce the consumption and disposal of plastic carryout bags that brings together the interests of supermarkets and retail stores, environmental groups, the plastic bag industry, local government, and the public. This program will take effect on July 1, 2008 in the County unincorporated areas and partner cities.
